Salary Calculator Guide: Hourly, Annual & Take-Home Pay
"$25/hour" and "$52,000/year" sound like different numbers but represent the same gross pay — most of the time. This guide explains the standard conversion, why it can mislead, and how to bridge the gap between a job offer's headline number and what actually lands in your bank account.
The Hourly ↔ Annual Conversion
- 2,080 = 40 hours/week × 52 weeks/year
This assumes a full-time, year-round schedule with no unpaid time off.
Example: $25/hour × 2,080 = $52,000/year. Conversely, a $60,000 salary = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85/hour.
Overtime Changes the Math
If you're hourly and work overtime, the FLSA requires time-and-a-half (1.5×) above 40 hours/week. So 45 hours at $20/hour = (40 × $20) + (5 × $30) = $800 + $150 = $950/week, not 45 × $20 = $900.
If you're offered $60,000 but regularly work 50 hours/week, your effective hourly rate drops to $60,000 ÷ 2,600 = $23.08 — below what an hourly employee at $25 would earn for the same hours. Compare jobs on effective hourly rate, not headline salary.
Gross vs. Take-Home
Your salary is gross — before any deductions. Take-home (net) pay is what's left after:
- Federal income tax — progressive brackets, 10%–37%.
- State income tax — 0% (TX, FL, WA) to 13.3% (CA top rate).
- FICA — Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45% = 7.65%.
- Benefits — health insurance premiums, 401(k) contributions (often 3–6%).
A $60,000 salary in a high-tax state might yield ~$42,000 take-home (70% of gross). In a no-tax state with cheaper benefits, it could be ~$46,000.
Comparing Job Offers
When evaluating offers, look beyond base salary:
- 401(k) match — a 5% match on $60K is $3,000 free per year.
- Health premium share — a $200/month difference = $2,400/year.
- Paid time off — 2 weeks vs. 4 weeks is a ~4% effective raise.
Put It Into Practice
Convert hourly to annual (or vice versa) and estimate take-home pay after tax and FICA.
Gross vs. Take-Home
- Federal income tax ——
- State income tax —— 0%(TX, FL, WA)到 13.3%(CA 最高税率)。
- FICA —— Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45% = 7.65%。
- Health premium share ——
- Paid time off —— 2 周 vs. 4 周相当于约 4% 的有效加薪。
